The British Virgin
Islands
March 26 - April 3, 2005
After our last sailing trip to the British Virgin Islands, Allison and
I talked it up so much that Allison's
sister Olivia and mother Laurie wanted to try it for themselves.
After much begging and pleading,
they finally managed to convince us to go back with them this
spring...ok, it didn't take much convincing,
the merest mention of the possibility and we started salivating
uncontrollably. The British Virgin Islands
boast some of the most wonderful sailing
waters in the world: a cruising area 32 miles
long by 16 miles
wide, containing crystal-clear waters, gorgeous
snorkling, deep-water passages, line-of-sight navigation,
and plenty of mooring buoys just off
picture-perfect beaches with festive bars and delicious
restaurants.
Again, we chartered a 34-foot Beneteau yacht
through The
Moorings, this time negotiating
directly with the owner of the boat to buy some of his "owner's time"
at a significant discount...
it worked out very well, and I'd certainly go this route again.
It's a great boat for four people...
as long as nobody needs too much alone time. It's comfortable,
handles well, and is very
economical. And with the wonderfully warm temperatures and
comfortable consistant trade
winds, most of our time was spent on the deck, in the water, or
exploring the possibilities ashore.
You know you've had a great trip when the last few days are spent
fantasizing about
what everyone wants to do the next time you do the same trip
again...and that's exactly
what we did. We had a wonderful time, and whether it's the BVI's, the
South Pacific,
or who knows where else, I really hope we get a chance to do something
similar again.
For now, we'll look at these photos and remember our most recent time
in the Islands.
