March for Women's Lives
Washington, D.C.
April 25, 2004
The last weekend of April saw the first major pro-choice march in
DC since 1992. Estimates for attendence were on the order
of 600,000 to 1,300,000, depending on who was estimating. Either
way, it's described as the largest march in many years.
Allison and I were among the throngs, along with my aunt Ronnie and her
girlfriend Suzie, visiting from the still-frigid north.
The crowd was cheeful and friendly under the overcast skies.
There was a sense that people
felt comfortable, politically, in a way they hadn't in the last four
years in our country.
Many signs took advantage of, and here I paraphrase the
Washington Post: "...the biggest gift the current administration has given to the pro-choice
movement is a vice-president named "Dick" and a president named "Bush."
